UNDERWATER RADIATED NOISE (URN)

Underwater radiated noise from commercial shipping contributes significantly to ocean ambient noise, which has a negative impact on the marine environment. For this reason, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive and IMO have established standards and guidelines for reducing noise radiated by vessels.

Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore supports shipbuilders and operators measure and reduce underwater noise radiation in order to obtain a notation. This improves environmental performance, while enhancing crew comfort and boosting the energy efficiency of vessels.

As a shipbuilder or operator, you are encouraged to comply with IMO guidelines to mitigate underwater ambient noise. Meeting URN standards protects the marine environment, and the reduction of vessel vibration will improve onboard comfort for both passengers and crew. Additionally, ships with minimized noise radiation burn less fuel. This allows you to boost the energy efficiency of your fleet, helping you achieve crucial cost savings in a competitive market.

  • Our URN notation supports you to mitigate the impact of ambient noise on environment and marine life
  • It helps you future-proof your ship by anticipating implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive
  • Additional benefits include improved crew and passenger comfort onboard, better fuel efficiency and lower costs
  • Our approach promotes reliable data through a holistic, transparent process

OUR OFFER

NOTATION LEVELS ADAPTED TO SPECIFIC NEEDS

We offer two levels of URN notation: one for vessels seeking to reduce noise impact to an acceptable level (URN – controlled vessel) and a second for improved environmental protection (URN – advanced vessel). Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore also offers support to get a specialist notation for ships with specific equipment or requirements (i.e., research vessels).

A 4-STEP PROCESS

Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore awards URN notations through a comprehensive, four-step assessment program. First, we define the test site, controlling for environmental factors (i.e., water depth, weather conditions). Second, we measure and assess noise radiation while the vessel is active. Third, we report detailed measurements and recommend improvement areas. Finally, Bureau Veritas Solutions Marine & Offshore ensures compliance and delivers the URN class certificate.
