INLAND NAVIGATION
SAFE INLAND NAVIGATION FOR OVER A CENTURY
Political support for waterway transport and an increasing appetite for river cruises supports the inland navigation market. With varying regulations and restrictions in place around the world, owners need a competent partner to understand the risks, help them stay compliant, and optimize their vessels.
Bureau Veritas offers a range of Rules relating to Inland Navigation, covering vessels, floating structures and harbour equipment. Our experience, technical knowledge and global presence make us a valuable partner to both vessel owners and flag authorities.
OUR OFFER
DEDICATED RULES FOR INLAND NAVIGATION
Bureau Veritas’ experience in classing inland navigation vessels goes back a long way: we published our first dedicated Rules in 1902. Our Rules (NR 217) apply to a wide range of vessels, from passenger ships to dry cargo and tanker vessels, and from pushers to launches, operating in estuaries, rivers, tributaries, canals and lakes.
UP-TO-DATE CLASSIFICATION SUPPORT
We provide design review, certification of materials and equipment and installation and maintenance surveys. We can also support clients to comply with the European Agreement on the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways for dry, liquid or gaseous products.
INSPECTION OF HARBOR EQUIPMENT AND FLOATING STRUCTURES
In addition to classification of inland navigation vessels, we provide dedicated Rules for infrastructure. These include Rules for floating establishments (NR 580) with projects for public spaces classed such as hotels and restaurants.
We also offer Rules for harbor equipment (NR 612) such as floating bridges and storages, and landing and floating docks.
A GLOBAL INLAND NAVIGATION PRESENCE
More and more countries require classification for ships operating on inland waterways. Bureau Veritas has kept pace with demand, opening offices in main inland waterway hubs around the world. We also provide support to flag state authorities to help develop national requirements in cases where no regulations have yet been implemented.
INDUSTRY LEADERS IN ALTERNATIVE PROPULSION
Proximity to populations makes emissions a key concern in inland waterways. Bureau Veritas offers expertise in LNG propulsion as well as electric and hybrid solutions, with additional class notations available.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Our research team works with academic institutions, partners and clients to improve understanding of risk and structural integrity. Recent work includes analysis of hull girder deflection; improved prediction of bending efficiency; and simulation of dynamic loads.
