ISO 14064 – 1:

QUANTIFICATION AND REPORTING OF

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND REMOVALS

SITUATION OF GHG EMISSIONS IN VIETNAM

According to the National GHG inventory Technical Report of Vietnam in 2014 (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in 2018), in the fields of GHG emissions, the GHG emission rate in the energy sector (including transportation activities) accounts for 53.8%,  agriculture with 27.92%, industrial process and product usage (IPPU) with 12.01% and final is a waste industry with 6.69%.

Vietnam has reviewed and determined GHG emission reduction targets by 2030 compared to the business as usual scenario (BAU) in order to contribute to the early achievement of a new Global Climate Agreement after 2020 (The Paris Agreement) as well as responding to climate change and achieving the goal of keeping the average global temperature rising below 2oC by 2100.

The goals and key tasks set out in the Paris Agreement Implementation Plan on climate change in Vietnam for the period 2021-2030 were issued by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 2053/QD-TTG dated October 28, 2016, as follows:

  • Firstly, the contribution target is self-realized by the country with domestic resources, by 2030, Vietnam will reduce its total GHG emissions by 8% compared to BAU, in which: 20% reduction in emission intensity per unit of GDP compared to 2010 and increased forest cover by 45%.
  • Second, contribution target when more international support is available: The above 8% contribution can be increased to 25% when receiving international support through bilateral, multilateral cooperation and implementation of mechanisms in the New Global Climate Agreement, which 30% reduce emissions intensity per unit of GDP compared with 2010.

ISO 14064-1:2018 - SPECIFICATION WITH GUIDANCE AT THE ORGANIZATION LEVEL FOR QUANTIFICATION AND REPORTING OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND REMOVALS

Recently, “Carbon Footprint” has been mentioned in the media as the recognized best practice for organizations that need to monitor their carbon emissions and efforts to reduce those emissions. Through monitoring activities and verification reports, organizations will have authentic data to underpin changes and reduce impacts, helping organizations achieve their emission reduction and management goals of Greenhouse gas (GHG).

The ISO 14064-1 standard includes the principles and needed requirements to quantify and report greenhouse gas emissions & removals. The standard covers the requirements from design, development, management, reporting to GHG verification of the organization. Bureau Veritas Certification has been developing a verification mechanism to ISO 14064-1 since 2006 and has gained extensive experience through global GHG verification projects.

Verification allows organizations to proactively demonstrate their carbon footprint calculations and measurements through accurate, public reporting from a reputable organization such as Bureau Veritas Certification, and be also considered a strong commitment message from the organization towards sustainable development.
