INDUSTRY CHALLENGE

Growing concerns about the negative impacts of hazardous substances on health and the environment have prompted various countries, including the United States, China, the European Union, and other Asian nations, to introduce legislation and restrictions on such substances. Governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations, and the evolving competitive landscape are also pressuring businesses to minimize users' and the environment's exposure to harmful chemicals and discharges. Brands, retailers, and manufacturers are additionally grappling with challenges related to managing overall quality costs, optimizing supply chains, ensuring scalability and transparency, and staying updated on chemical management practices.

OUR APPROACH

Bureau Veritas' Chemical Management Solution assists brands, retailers, and manufacturers in identifying and addressing hazardous and restricted substances that may be present in their products or used in the manufacturing process. We help define and implement a comprehensive Chemical Management Program to help you comply with governmental requirements and industry standards in the markets where your products are sold.

REACH

Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is a European Regulation designed to enhance the protection of human health and the environment.

Depending on the quantities and toxicity of chemical substances in a product intended for end-users within the EU, REACH mandates that product manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and importers register these substances with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).

For REACH registration, it is essential to know:

  • The chemical substances and their quantities in the product.
  • The substances the product might release and their impact.
  • Whether the product contains substances like carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins.

Bureau Veritas offers specialized services to help businesses comply with the REACH Regulation, including:

  • REACH seminars
  • REACH advisory
  • Review of product and category lines, resulting in risk analysis and advice on implementing the REACH directive
  • REACH testing
    • Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) full test
    • SVHC basic test
    • CHA candidate test

RoHS DIRECTIVE

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive originated in the European Union. RoHS restricts the use of hazardous materials, such as heavy metals and flame retardants, in electrical and electronic devices. In January 2013, the original RoHS directive was replaced with RoHS 2.
