SBTI - ACCELERATE

YOUR COMPANY'S

SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

Effective emissions reduction solutions for businesses

Business Challenges

Consumers are more eco-conscious than ever, and it's important for companies to be transparent and not make false claims about their sustainability efforts. Achieving net-zero emissions requires significant effort and investment, and businesses should set realistic goals and track and report their progress regularly. However, the lack of guidelines and regulations can make it challenging for businesses to determine where to begin and what steps to take.

SBTi – an ultimate solution for your Net-zero commitment

Companies choose SBTi (Science-Based Targets initiative) for their GHG commitment as it provides a robust framework for setting and verifying GHG reduction targets. SBTi's approach aligns with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and by committing to it, companies can demonstrate their leadership in addressing climate change. SBTi helps companies by providing a roadmap for reducing GHG emissions, setting ambitious targets, and tracking progress over time. Additionally, SBTi offers access to a global network of experts, which makes it easier for companies to achieve their GHG reduction goals. Overall, SBTi is a reliable framework that helps companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and contribute to a more sustainable future.

What is SBTi?

The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Science-based target setting is already becoming part of the yearly reporting practice of companies and the data infrastructure for institutional investors through incorporation in the CDP questionnaire and scoring.

SBTi's goal is to support businesses and organizations in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 - below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial times. To achieve this target, businesses and organizations must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030 compared to 2010 and reach net zero emissions by 2050.

As of October 2023, SBTi has over 6,000 participating businesses and organizations globally, including leading companies such as Unilever, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Nike.

SBTi's emission reduction targets are built on scientific research on climate change. These targets ensure that businesses and organizations take the necessary steps to limit global warming. SBTi provides emissions reduction targets for businesses and organizations of all industries and sizes. These goals are personalized for each business and organization based on business type, size, and location. Businesses and organizations must take specific steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve SBTi's goals. These steps may include:

  • Invest in renewable energy sources
  • Increase energy efficiency
  • Minimize waste
  • Increase the use of recycled materials

SBTi is a vital tool to help businesses and organizations reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to global efforts to respond to climate change.

How can companies set a science-based target?

The private sector must play a fundamental role in reducing GHG emissions. Embedding science-based targets in sustainability management is crucial.

Setting a science-based target is a five-step process:

  • Commit: submit a letter establishing your intent to set a science-based target
  • Develop: work on an emissions reduction target in line with the SBTi’s criteria
  • Submit: present your target to the SBTi for official validation
  • Communicate: announce your target and inform your stakeholders
  • Disclose: report company-wide emissions and track target progress annually
