Sustainability & Reparability
for Technology Products

Reparability is a Key Point for the Future

CHALLENGE

In today's market, companies are held responsible for the effects of their products on the environment and society. Demonstrating sustainability throughout the product lifecycle, from design to after-sales, is crucial for companies to showcase their commitment to responsible business practices.

The aim of the European Commission is to increase the lifespan of home appliances through these requirements:
• Spare parts* to be replaced by professional repairmen & end-user
• Availability of those spare parts & maximum delivery time
• Appliance repair and maintenance information

*"Spare part" means a separate part that can replace a part with the same or similar function in a product. Spare parts must be replaceable with the use of commonly available tools and without permanent damage to the appliance.

As mandated by French law, the reparability index must now be disclosed upon purchase of certain types of technology and household appliances, including window washing machines, smartphones, laptop computers, televisions, and electric lawnmowers, starting January 1, 2021.

The reparability index serves a critical purpose in keeping consumers informed about their device's repairability and promoting prompt repairs. The score is determined by averaging the criteria scored out of 10, providing a reliable measure of a device's repairability.

This repairability index covers:
• Documentation availability
• Disassembly, access and tools
• Availability of spare parts
• Spare parts prices
• Criterion specific to the category of equipment concerned
