Australia updates
Mandatory Care Labelling For
Clothing and Textiles

Oct. 3 2023

On September 5, 2023, an update to the Australian statutory standard for care labelling for clothes and textiles was made, outlining the labeling requirements for clothing and textile products.

Consumer Product Information Standard Care Labelling for Clothing and Textile Products (Consumer Protection Notice No. 25 of 2010) (Federal Register of Legislation No. F2010L02290) is replaced by the mandatory standard, "Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard 2023," with an 18-month transitional period.

The Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard 2023, a statutory standard, spells out the requirements for the labeling of a number of specified textile products. In accordance with the statutory norm, all textile products, including apparel, textiles, furniture, suede skins, leathers, and furs, must have suitable care instructions labeled on them.

The voluntary Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1957:1998 Textiles - Care Labelling and the International Standard ISO 3758:2012 Textiles—Care Labelling Code utilizing Symbols served as the foundation for this mandatory standard.

The mandatory standard offers transitional periods to let providers get used to the new demands.

Suppliers must still give an English-language care label during the first transitional period (5 September 2023–4 March 2024), but they are allowed to add care symbols.

Suppliers can offer care instructions in English or by utilizing the global care symbols starting on March 5, 2024, the second transitional period.
