Clean Development Mechanism– CDM

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CDM

What is CDM?

The CDM is a technical financing mechanism to reduce greenhouse gas emissions(CO2, CH4, N20, CFC, và SF6) proposed on the basis of the Kyoto Protocol.

The Kyoto Protocol was formed in 1997 on the basis of the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to provide a legal framework for countries, especially industrialized countries, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and international emissions trading.

The main outcome of the Kyoto Protocol was the identification of national emission reduction targets in industrialized countries and the establishment of three bases by which the parties to the Kyoto Protocol could trade emissions rights: joint implementation, clean development mechanism (CDM) and international emissions trading.

Among these mechanisms, CDM is classified as a "start now" priority.

THE BENEFITS OF CDM

  • Helping developing countries achieve sustainable development
  • Facilitating developed countries to achieve their emission reduction targets through projects implemented in developing countries

GHG emissions from each CDM project will be measured using internationally accepted methods and expressed in standard units of measurement called CERs. Certified Emission Reductions (1CER = 1 ton of CO2 equivalent).

Which businesses can register to implement CDM?

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has established a list of industries with potential for CDM implementation. Mainly industries: transportation; renewable and improved energy efficiency; waste disposal treatment; construct; reforestation and regeneration; production activities generating greenhouse gases (cattle raising, production of carbonated beverages, etc.)

Bureau Veritas Certification is recognized as a certification body capable of conducting assessments of CDM projects globally.
